The Benefits of Adding 2.4GHz or 900MHz to Your Customer's 5GHz Network

Authored by Steve Van Tol, Inside Sales Manager

The success of Motorola and Trango Broadband’s 5Ghz band products is well known and has been well documented in the wireless industry. This technology has been very well received into multiple verticals including education, government and enterprise. Given that the 5Ghz products require line of sight (LOS), resellers and WISPs were previously forced to look at other solutions for non-line of sight applications. Because of this, Motorola and Trango have expanded their product portfolio to accommodate these needs.

2.4Ghz and 900Mhz band products give resellers and WISPs the ability to both overcome LOS problems and give them the ability to extend networks to reach targets that might have been out of range. The throughput is comparable to the 5.2 and 5.7 equipment but with a greater range. These products are very effective for penetrating areas where foliage obscures line-of-sight between the access point and the subscriber module.

Motorola’s 2.4GHz product is unique in the fact that it isn’t an 802.11 system. It still gives the same proprietary solution that offers both DES and AES capability. Regarding throughput, the 2.4 solution is comparable to their 5.2 and 5.7GHz products, but with greater range. You can also mount the three different frequencies on the same tower to gain greater investment control. Motorola also offers a Backhaul solution at 10 Mbps and a 20 Mbps throughput. These backhaul units complement existing Canopy systems with a range of 35 miles and impressive effective throughputs.

Trango has also released their 900 MHz product to complement their 5 Ghz line. This product is extremely effective in penetrating areas where foliage obscures line-of-sight between the access point and the subscriber module. Benefits of using the Trango 900 MHz products are:

  • Range: 2 miles for line of sight and outstanding non-line-of-sight (NLOS) range

  • External antenna option for greater range and fade margin

  • Transmission at greater than T1 speed

  • 4 channels that can be redefined
